Preparation and analysis of pottery’s surface samples for Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

is conducted in the Laboratory for analysis of geological materials at the Faculty of Mining,

Geology and Petroleum Engineering. As an effective tool in identifying the presence of organic

and inorganic compounds, the analysis provides characterization of the materials.

Preparation of clay sediments for X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD)

Preparation of archaeological and geological samples for X-ray diffraction analysis is also carried out

in the Laboratory for analysis of geological materials at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering.

X-ray diffraction analysis of ceramics and clay sediments collected in the immediate vicinity of archaeological

sites will provide insight into the mineral composition and origin of pottery raw materials.

Preparation of ceramic thin sections

Preparation of ceramics thin section is carried out in the Laboratory for analysis of geological materials

at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, University of Zagreb.

The main purpose of ceramic petrography is the characterization of materials, classification

of ceramic groups, interpretation of provenance and reconstruction of technology.

Collection of geological-archaeological samples

Systematic data collection will be carried out through project activities, which will enable

the establishmentof a specialized scientific database as well as a collection of geological

and archaeological samples at the Institute of Archaeology.

CERAMIC PETROGRAPHY

A working unit (Microscope Zeiss Axiolab 5) has been established at the Institute of

Archeology for the interpretation of ceramic petrography.
